UNO’s Chicago Grill-Restaurant Review

I am honored to have Jane Trevett as my first guest blogger at Gluten-Free Inspired.

Jane Trevett is the Co-founder of the Greater New Haven Celiac Group and she has been an inspiration to me since I joined this group about a year ago.  She is one of the most knowledgeable people I know when it comes to celiac disease and the complex web of resources available to celiacs and people with gluten intolerance.   When I have a question about gluten-free living, I always turn to Jane.

UNO’S CHICAGO GRILL HAS GLUTEN-FREE MENU
By Jane Trevett, Co-founder

We have all heard that Uno’s GF Pizza was coming to their many chains throughout the country. I would like to tell you about my positive experience with the UNO’S restaurants in both Milford and Fairfield. There are other locationsin Derby, Manchester and Danbury that I have not visited and cannot comment about. According to their website, you must phone the restaurant you are visiting to make sure the gf pizza is available at the location near you.  According to UNO’S menu, not only do many UNO’S have gluten-free pizza, but they have a very extensive gf menu, which they did not have a year or so ago. This includes Top Sirloin Steak, Chop House Classic, Lemon Basil Salmon, Baby and Grilled Mahi-Mahi with Mango Salsa, and two kinds of pizza – cheese and pepperoni. Also available is a gf ice cream sundae. These were all available in both Milford and Fairfield. They also have take out services.

I was apprehensive about ordering the gf pizza, because after 44 years on the gf diet, I still thought, “What if they get the pizzas mixed up and I get one with gluten. I can’t afford to get sick!” I always tell the hostess that I want a gf menu which saves time and works out best from my experience. The hostess whipped out a colorful gf menu. I then explained my apprehension to my waitress. She assured me that the manager would serve my gf pizza, which should dispel my greatest fears! The manager not only served my gf pizza, but he assured me that UNOS has a dedicated corner of their kitchen just for preparing gluten-free meals in order to avoid cross-contamination. That was great news!

Never in my wildest dreams could I envision 44 years ago that you could go into a national chain and order gf pizza and one so reasonable. The cheese pizza was $11.49.

The celiac community has come a long way thanks to the efforts of dedicated celiacs like all of you. Thanks for your hard work and dedication by “making a difference” so that others can enjoy the gf diet in restaurants!

Additional Note:  I agree wholeheartedly with Jane’s review.  I visited the Uno’s Pizza at the Holyoke Mall at Ingleside and I got the same exact treatment from waitstaff.  I was also very happy with my pizza.

We have eaten a few times at Uno’s Chicago Grill at Swampscott Mall/Vinin Square MA.

We go with our grandchildren and find the place to be child friendly. I was very pleased to find a gluten free menu on the first visit and that is why I have returned.

I cannot comment on the pizza as I am not keen on eating it. They have made an effort to have several other menu items that are gluten free.
